Assistant Quality Manager

The secret to DMS’s success is having passionate growers and a working reputation that attracts the very best people. Operating two major post-harvest facilities in Te Puna and Te Puke packing kiwifruit and avocados, DMS also manages over 100 kiwifruit and 150 avocado orchards on behalf of it's growers. With 30+ seasons under your belt, the standard gets set high, and that’s why more and more growers refuse to settle for anything less than DMS.

Your job

During our main kiwifruit packing season (March to June) and into the repack period (generally July to November dependent on shipping orders) you will focus on:

  • Providing leadership and support to the Quality Control team, ensuring that the sampling and monitoring or product and the packing process meet relevant industry and food safety standards, all while you are very much in the 'doing' seat as well as some time in the 'driving' seat!
  • Working with the Quality Manager with the day-to-day operation as well as all internal and external audit processes
  • Working closely with the Production team to ensure fruit is being packed to optimise grower quality and pack outs
  • Ensuring all documentation and records are maintained accurately and comply with all requirements.

Between December to February you'll get to have a change in scenery as you head out in the orchards to help with the Kiwigreen sampling and pest monitoring processes, as well as being involved in general maintenance and cleaning in preparation for the following packing season.

Flexibility with extended hours (including weekends and the possibility for night shifts), particularly during the packing season is essential as we operate our packhouse 24/7 during this time.

About you

  • Quality qualification/s or previous experience in a similar role; an understanding of fruit/food processing, MAO systems or manufacturing is preferred
  • Experience within the kiwifruit industry or similar perishable food environment, with auditing and compliance monitoring
  • Strong attention to detail, planning and prioritising
  • Experience leading/supervising teams
  • Strong English language verbal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively in a highly diverse work environment
  • Adaptable and solution oriented, able to think and trouble shoot quickly
  • Team player with a positive, friendly manner.
